Back Nawar Nasar Khan National Coordinator Nawar Nasar Khan is an environmental science graduate with a profound commitment to environmental conservation. She is currently working as a Research Associate at Swisscontact-Bangladesh, with the focus of addressing the skills development, environmental, and social compliance needs of the RMG (Ready-Made Garments) sector. Driven by her passion for sustainability, she has co-founded 'Green and Beyond Mag,' a digital media platform that harnesses the power of storytelling to promote climate optimism and sustainable living. In her early career at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) - in Bangladesh, Nawar designed a weather-based digital advisory for livestock and poultry, featured in the digital app 'Agvisely' dedicated for farmers' in Bangladesh. Her research further extends to sustainable aquaculture, where she and her team conducted a wet lab project identifying a herbal alternative to toxic antibiotics for sustainable aquaculture. Back in 2022, Nawar was the President of the Green Planet Club at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), where she actively empowered and educated young minds towards climate action for a greener future. She has also gained significant experience in the field of freshwater and community conservation through her work with organizations such as the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy. He is the founder of EnvoEdu, an environmental education organization, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and sustainability. With a versatile skill set encompassing leadership, communication, and computer proficiency, he has actively engaged in over 10 social development organizations. Nayeem has showcased his leadership abilities as President of the Bangladesh Soil Club and in roles such as Divisional Coordinator at SERAC-Bangladesh NGO. His national and regional coordination experience includes serving as National Coordinator for the Termite Society and Chief Coordinator for 64D Initiatives. Moreover, he has advocated for youth engagement as a member of Global Platform Bangladesh. Back Vivek Trivedi National Coordinator Climate Disaster and Livelihood Dr. Vivek Trivedi is a Ph.D. in Social Work from Center for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Punjabi University, Patiala and, PG Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from IGNOU. He is a Climate Reality Fellow (2009), at the Asia Pacific Summit, in Melbourne, hosted by the Australian Conservation Foundation. Oxfam Australia, Community Aid Abroad and UNESCO selected him in International Youth Parliament (2004) and UNESCO ESD twin world conferences, 2014 respectively and nominated him as Drafting Committee Member for ESD Youth Statement incorporated in Nagoya Declaration 2014. He has been awarded with Hindustan Times Brightest Young Climate Leadership Award 2010 by the British Council, New Delhi and conferred twice State Award in 2014 and 2020 by Chandigarh Administration on 65th Republic Day and 74th Independence Day 2020 for meritorious services in Social and Public Affairs. Also, he is an alumnus of Diplomacy Training Programme (DTP), University New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, Jeju International Training Center, UNITAR/CIFAL, Jeju, South Korea. His expertise are in Organizational Development & Strengthening, International Relations and Partnership Building, Advocacy, Programme Management and Administration, M&E and Capacity Building etc. He founded Association of Professional Social Workers and Development Practitioners (APSWDP) in 2014; a think tank and is instrumental in getting Special Consultative Status under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC), Accreditation and Observer Status under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). She is heavily involved with the UNFPA Youth Task-force Committee on Population, SRHR, and Climate Action; Country Coordinator at Climate Reality Project Bangladesh; NDC Reviewer; serves as CSO Asia Representative of the GFF-CSCG steering committee, Country Coordinator of Global South Coalition of Dignified Menstruation, Representative of the International Youth Alliance of Family Planning-Bangladesh, WORTH fellow on Climate Action and Women Empowerment; Fellow of Climate Reality Leadership Program; National Coordinator of the Youth Coalition of Climate Justice (YCCJ) and Global Vice-versa Champion. She joined the COP26, COP27, and COP28 as a youth negotiator to represent the UNFPA Youth Advisory Committee on Climate Action and SRHR. Tasnia's passion for youth leadership, dedication, and experience in the field of climate action make her a negotiator in the global fight against the climate crisis. Her contributions to the climate field have been valued by the Bangladesh government, which allowed her to participate as the official youth delegate to contribute to the NDC process in COP27, followed by presenting the findings (UNFPA-NDC-Global Report_2023.pdf) in COP28. Through NDC findings, I facilitated country access to women's capacity-building support and knowledge resources in response to requests for support on gender mainstreaming in climate action; and surfaced successes, effective practices, and lessons from around the world and widely disseminated these through country peer exchanges and knowledge products, as well as shared empowering tales of women making a difference. Recently, she has started to work as a technical lead to develop the Bangladesh factsheet on Climate Action and Gender, where the factsheet will be catapulted in the upcoming COP29, Bake- Azerbaijan. Back Phurpa Lama Country Coordinator Phurpa Lama is from Nepal, a dedicated climate activist and educator hailing from Nepal, boasting over 13 years of expertise in addressing climate change issues. His journey began in Denmark, where he was selected to attend the come2gether Climate Ambassador Conference in 2009. Further enhancing his knowledge, he earned a degree in Crossing Borders Global Studies from Krogerup Hojskole in Denmark, focusing on environmental sustainability, climate change, and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Between 2012 and 2015, he served as a Resource Person at the NEFIN Climate Change Partnership Program in Nepal. In 2013, he underwent training by former US Vice President Al Gore and officially became a Climate Reality Leader for the Climate Reality Project. His commitment extended to numerous performances on climate change in isolated Nepalese villages, accompanied by over two dozen training sessions on climate change and REDD+ issues for various Indigenous Peoples organizations. His efforts aimed to empower communities with knowledge about the climate crisis, fostering meaningful actions for change. Notably, he initiated the "Light Up A Life For A Better Nepal" project after the devastating earthquake in 2015. This project, launched shortly thereafter, focused on supplying solar power lamps to villages devoid of electricity, concurrently raising awareness about the harmful impact of petrol-powered lamps. The primary objective is to introduce solar systems to hundreds of homes currently without electricity, replacing fossil fuel-based lighting systems in Nepal's remote mountain villages with sustainable alternatives. His advocacy extends globally, as he mentored during Climate Reality Leadership Corps events held in New Delhi, Florida, Philippines, and Pittsburgh. Back Muntasir Mamun National Coordinator Muntasir Mamun is an engineer turned social entrepreneur and adventurer. Muntasir is the Country Coordinator for The Ocean Conservancy, US, and the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival World Tour, Canada. He also coordinates Kewkradong Bangladesh (www.kewkradong.com), an organization that runs advanced environmental protection projects in the oceans around Bangladesh. These projects focus on surveying and cleaning up marine debris while raising public awareness of its environmental impact. Muntasir has been involved in a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-led research program on Dhaka’s traffic congestion and successfully implemented a pilot project for a digital bus system in Dhaka for the Prime Minister’s Office of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He participated in CSIRO's (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, an Australian government agency for scientific research) “Plastic Leakage to Ocean” project and partnered with OSEAN (Our Sea of East Asia Network, based in South Korea). He is also a member of the Asia-Pacific Civil Forum on Marine Litter (APML). Muntasir trained at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in India, completing both Basic and Advanced Mountaineering courses. He participated in four mountaineering expeditions in India, including the first Bangladeshi-India joint international mountaineering expedition for peace. Additionally, he has bicycled more than 40,000 km across 14 countries, including the USA, Canada, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Rwanda, New Zealand, Brazil, India, and France. He is the published author of three books on adventure travel and has organized six national and international photography exhibitions. He regularly writes about microplastics, plastic pollution, and environmental issues. Muntasir has received numerous awards and recognitions, including The British Council's International Climate Champion and The World Bank's Connect4Climate award. Back Seema Bali National Coordinator Sustainability Education Seema Bali is the Vice Principal at St. Mary’s School, Dwarka, New Delhi, where she has served since 2009. With a career spanning over three decades, she also heads the Science Department and is a key member of the School Management Committee. Seema’s expertise lies in curriculum development, having collaborated with NCERT on the “Development of Training Package in Biology at Higher Secondary Stage” and edited the "Eureka Plus-Science Series" for Classes 1-8. She has been instrumental in faculty development, coordinating training sessions, and class observations. Seema is also the Deputy Superintendent for CBSE board exams since 2004 and plays a crucial role in the inclusion of Children with Special Needs (CWSN). Her contributions extend beyond academics; she has mentored students in eco-friendly initiatives, earning numerous awards, including the "Best Practice Innovation" Award from the School of Educators Global Education Awards, and the “Innovation and Successful Implementation” Award from TERI and TETRA PAK. She has also trained students to represent India at international forums, such as the Children’s World Summit on Environment in Japan. Seema is a recognized figure in sustainability education, having authored and presented “Sustainability Education through the Lens of a School” at the International Conference on Sustainability Education. She has represented India at the NCD Alliance workshop in Geneva and is a Master Trainer for the "Happy School Curriculum" with CBSE. Seema’s work embodies her commitment to integrating environmental consciousness and sustainable practices into the educational landscape. Winners of Youth for Earth 2023 Junior Category 1st Position Project - Neeraja Project Neeraja from Tribal Residential School, Rohile, Trimbakeshwar, Nashik, Maharashtra. The groundbreaking initiative under Project Neeraja is dedicated to watershed development by constructing continuous contour trenches and loose boulder structures. They addressed the problem of severe soil erosion in Rohile village which is a heavy rainfall area. Their steadfast climate commitment is praiseworthy. We anticipate that with the active participation of students and the local community, they will devise more innovative ideas for a sustainable future. 2nd Position Project - BacWP Project BacWP from The Iconic School, Bhopal came with a big, bold idea of making biodegradable sanitary pads aiming to drive systemic change for menstrual hygiene & proper waste decomposition. They used readily available natural resources such as water hyacinth, bagasse and papaya fiber for making napkins. This project has the potential for combined benefits like safe disposal, decomposition & hygiene. Their climate co-benefits as the outcome of this project with bare minimum resources is commendable. Such inventive attitudes of youth are admirable & we expect they will scale up in future. 3rd Position Project - Passionately Natural Project Passionately Natural from TVS Academy Hosur advocated organic farming with the aim to create a kitchen garden, minimizing the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides towards a sustainable food system. They also ensured the farmers community participation by using ‘Panchagavya’ which boosts growth & immunity in the plant system and ‘Jeevamrutham’ that enhances soil fertility. Their effort is applaudable for spreading awareness about organic farming. We expect they will explore the future possibilities of climate smart agriculture with their ingenious approach. 4th Position Project - BeejGole Project Beejgole from the students of Adarsh Vidyamandir Satara, Maharashtra came with an idea of maximizing the seed germination rate & recommendation for an easy way of growing trees. They made the seed balls, where seeds were wrapped in a mixture of clay, cattle dung or compost to protect the seeds from predators. They selected 10 native species with the help of the village community & local Joint Forest Management Committee. It’s a laudable effort having great future potential to support climate informed conservation. 5th Position Project - Finobadi The Project Finobadi from Govt. Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya came with the productive idea of a circular economy. ‘Finobadi’ is the combination of finance, innovation and kabadiwalas to address the critical problem of inefficient waste management and its harmful impacts on the environment. They made an online platform to connect individuals and businesses with trusted kabadiwalas for waste collection and recycling. Such innovative ideas of waste to wealth creation is the need of the hour for achieving net zero target against the climate crisis. Senior Category 1st Position Project - Tamira SES Project Tamira from Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment advocated a big bold idea for river restoration & rejuvenation of Tamiraparani. They ensured community engagement with a hyper local approach. They explored the interplay between its hydrological, ecological and socio-cultural dimensions with an active participation of the fishing community. Such a responsible attitude of youth towards climate action is praiseworthy & we anticipate that they will devise more innovative green solutions for a sustainable future. 2nd Position Project - Nirmiti We all know that Nature Based Solutions (NBS) are often described as ‘no regret’ options, providing benefits to people in a range of scenarios. Project Nirmiti from St. Josephs’ University conceived an objective of ‘Bioenzyme cleaners’ to combat disposal issues of toxic household cleaning products into water bodies. Their future objective of developing a climate sustainable business model for ‘Bio-enzymes’ has an amazing capacity to rejuvenate contaminated water. Their efforts towards green growth are commendable. 3rd Position Project - Polyfueler Nowadays, waste plastic has become a global concern, leading to pollution and posing significant threats to human health and nature. The revolutionary idea of waste management by transforming diverse plastic waste into fuel can be a long-term solution for the environment and for society's energy needs. Their practice of transition towards cleaner & greener future, fostering sustainable practices and contributing to a circular economy is applaudable through the project Polyfueler from Sershah Engineering College, Sasaram. 4th Position Project - Beat Plastic Pollution Plastic pollution-free world is not a choice but a commitment to life & a commitment to the next generation. Team Beat Plastic Pollution from Earkai Paathukaappu Sangam (Nature Protection Society) conducted several awareness campaigns, plastic waste collection drives, waste processing or recycling units & restricted the plastics entering into the ponds and ocean. They were guided by local forest rangers & also ensured community participation. Such an action-based approach by the team is applaudable. They have also launched Project PAD ATMs in association with the Glad Bharath, in which they distributed biodegradable sanitary napkins. 5th Position Project - Our Common Future Project Common Future from Charusat University came up with an idea of strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate related disasters, focussing on food security and impacts of climate change on it. They conducted several surveys, interviews with local communities, sharing ideas of climate-smart agriculture etc. We truly appreciate their efforts, though this project is in its nascent stage. We hope it will grow with time, strengthen their implementation and make remarkable changes. Go Back
