2019 (March-April) Climate Reality India Newsletter

​Our newsletter will provide updates from our programs, our fellow Climate Reality Leaders who are making difference and how each one of us can act to solve the crisis. And, we would love to know your story and act of leadership, because every action does matter.

CLIMATE CHANGE AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

Ecothon

Ecothon-Solutions for Sustainability was organised on 1-2 March, to bring out the need to balance the utilization of natural resources with the developmental goals of the country. 

The event was organized by Green Dream foundation and event organizing company Prospurs. TCRP India launched their new youth program called Climate Youth Leadership Program or CYLP at the event. The Program aims to catalyze a shift in how colleges and universities can turn green but also build the infrastructure to enable students to become informative citizens in driving pro-climate policies at local, state and national levels.

TCRP India also set up a selfie booth at the event to inspire people to take climate action pledge to reduce their carbon footprints. On the Day 2, Mr. Aditya Pundir, Country Manager of The Climate Reality Project India was invited as the speaker for the session on ‘why Climate action?’. Mr. Pundir talked about the impacts of climate change and the solutions we have in hand to protect earth.

Climate Reality Leaders Meet in Delhi

On 12th April, a Climate Reality Leaders meeting was organised for the CRLs in Delhi-NCR. The meeting was organised to discuss the upcoming programs of The Climate Reality Project India and to seek suggestions from the CRLs for their implementation.

​18 Climate Reality Leaders from various fields of expertise attended the meeting and provided their insights for the program.

CLIMATE CHANGE PRESENTATIONS AND LEADERSHIP ACTS

Climate Reality Presentation in Nagpur

The Climate Reality Project India in association with Global Shapers Nagpur organised a series of climate change programs in Nagpur. From 9th to 12th March, four events were organised where the Climate Reality presentation was delivered, and talks were made by the experts from various fields.
 
These programs were organised targeting different groups. The first event was organised for the students and the teachers explaining the importance of Climate literacy. The second event was for innovators and NGOs to discuss the effects of climate change need for innovation in addressing the urgency of climate change. The next event aimed at eco-governance, the importance of government policies at local level and impact it has in mitigating climate change. The last event focused on the role of social entrepreneurs, involving businesses and youth as stakeholders.

World Water Day event 

22nd March is celebrated as World Water Day. This year the theme for the World Water Day was ‘leaving no one behind’. On this occasion, Retd. Col. Shashikant Dalvi was invited as the Chief Guest to Anand Vidyaniketan School, Viman Nagar. He delivered the Climate reality presentation to the 150 students and staff of the school, briefing them about the reasons for global warming and how it is adversely affecting the natural resources like water. He also talked about the simple measures to conserve water and rain water harvesting methods. The event concluded with everyone taking water pledge to conserve water.

Earth Hour celebration 

This Earth Hour, Climate Reality Leader from Mumbai Ms. Elsie Gabriel staged a demonstration along the Powai Lake demanding its urgent clean up. The Powai lake is home to crocodiles and many other species but it is totally covered with water hyacinth that is choking the lake. With the help of her volunteers, Ms Gabriel removed the weeds and litter and sited that the largest collection of plastic thrash was of gutkha and chips plastic packing.
​
She also made people aware about the segregation of waste, ban on plastic and use of cloth bags by distributing hundreds of cloth bags to the public.

Earth Day Awareness Program

​On 22nd April, on the occasion of Earth Day, Climate Reality India and Deccan Education Society organised an event at DES’s RCF Secondary and Higher Secondary School at Karul, Alibaug, District Raigad, under the leadership of Dr. Nandini Deshmukh, District Manager, Mumbai. The program started with tree plantation by students, to celebrate the theme of Earth Day ‘Protect our species’.

The tree plantation was followed Climate Reality presentation and videos screening on protecting our environment, to the school students.  She also interacted with students about the solid waste management and need for behavioural change.

Climate Reality Presentations

​On 17th April, Climate change presentation was delivered by Mr Krishan Kalra, Trustee, The Climate Reality Project Foundation to the members of Ludhiana Management Association. The event was attended by more than 100 people that also included professors, retired government officials and industrialists among others. The presentation was followed by an interactive question answer session.

​The newest member of the Climate Reality India, Mr. Paras who attended the Climate Reality training in Atlanta last month, delivered his first climate change presentation at Vidarbha Management Association. He talked about the science of climate change and new business opportunities in CleanTech space.

Climate Reality Leader and District Manager Assam, Mr. Rituraj Phukan delivered the Climate Reality presentation to the students of the Moonlit High School in Tezpur, Assam. He emphasized on the climate change and biodiversity conservation with special reference to Assam. He talked about the 3Ws- Warming, Water and Wildlife.
