Send a Letter to the Media
Letters to the editors of print and TV media can result in more coverage of an issue and inform readers about topics they may not hear about as often as they should.
When discussing rooftop solar in a letter to the editor, highlight the problems being faced by both consumers and service providers to put pressure on officials and electricity companies to work toward a resolution.
Sample letter:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you today to encourage you to promote regional stories on rooftop solar to educate citizens on the benefits of clean energy.
As you may know, India has committed to install 175 GW renewable energy by 2022 and 350 GW total by 2030, when 40 percent of the country’s total energy needs will be met by renewables. The target is ambitious-but-vital, with India's coal consumption presently on the rise due to economic growth projected at more than 7 percent annually for about the next decade. The installed solar capacity in 2015 was only 5.6 GW. Installation in 2016 was only 1GW.
To meet our 2022 rooftop solar target of 40 GW, a major increase in efforts, resources, and ambition is required.
An encouraging amount of pro-solar legislation has been passed in last few months and many policies have been modified to encourage consumers to buy and install clean solar power. Unfortunately, electricity suppliers or distributors of electricity are not holding up their end of the bargain, despite the law and mandate to do so.
In this regard, I request you to please promote stories that educate the public and highlight the problems being faced by consumers pursuing rooftop solar, as it will allow Indians to transition to a more prosperous, self-sufficient, and sustainable future.
Regards
